It was felt necessary to include college teacher especially university college teachers where 4 years B.Sc (Hons) and M.Sc degree are offered in the training programme of NITUB. The Executive Committee of NITUB decided to organize training programmes on the Use, Maintenance and Trouble-shooting of Common Laboratory Equipment for College Teachers. The 36th training programme of NITUB was on the Use, Maintenance and Trouble-shooting of Common Laboratory Equipment for College Teachers. Which was held at the Ananda Mohan College, Mymensingh, and all university college teachers of Greater Mymensingh were requested to participate. In 16-20 September 2006, NITUB organized a similar type of workshop in Eden Mohila College where college teachers of Dhaka city participated. |

Instrument Repair Program
NITUB started its Instrument Repair Program in July 1996 and through this program NITUB is repairing non-functioning scientific equipment of different educational and research organizations of Bangladesh. Since the inception of this program NITUB has repaired more than 900 scientific instruments of various organizations of Bangladesh. In the year 2009, NITUB has repaired 108 non-functioning scientific equipment of different educational and research organizations. The reported book value of the repaired scientific instruments in 2009 is approximately BD Taka 1,42,80,000.00 (equivalent to U.S. $ 2,04,000.00). The list of instrument repaired is enclosed herewith
NITUB by its activities has generated awareness and also confidence among the scientific community to make non-functioning equipment work again. Organization like Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) has made yearly repair contract with NITUB for their scientific equipment. NITUB experts are now repairing BAPEX equipment on routine basis. BAPEX has renewed its contract with NITUB for another two years (2010 -2011). NITUB is looking forward to have service contract with other private and public organizations of Bangladesh.

Membership of NITUB
Three(03) scientists and technical personnel became members (2 life members + 1 ordinary member) of NITUB in 2009. Four ordinary members of NITUB became life members in this year.
AGM-2008 of NITUB
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NITUB for the year 2008 was held on Thursday, 05 March 2009 at 3-30 p.m. in Room No. 104 of the Mukarram Husain Khundkar Biggan Bhaban, Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka. The AGM was presided by Professor Mesbahuddin Ahmad, President of NITUB. Forty one (41) members were present in the meeting. The annual report of NITUB of 2008 was reviewed in the meeting and members present in the AGM appreciated the activities. The draft program of NITUB for the year 2009 and the budget for 2009 were also approved in the AGM-2008.
Visit of Dr. Peter Sundin and other scientist
Dr. Peter Sundin, Director, ISP, Sweden visited Dhaka on 6-10 December 2009. He visited Dhaka to see the activities of different ISP (IPICS) supported projects including NITUB. He was also the chief guest in the inaugural function of the training program of NITUB on GC, GC-MS. Professor Åke Bergman, Dept. of Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden also spoke in the inaugural session of the program and delivered one lecture in the program38th training programme of NITUB on GC, GC-MS.
Participation in International Conferences
TInternational Science Program (ISP) organized a International Conference titled, "Regional and Interregional Cooperation to Strengthen Basic Sciences in Developing Countries" on 1-4 September 2009 at UNCC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Among others the conference was participated by Research Project/ Network members of ISP supported programs. Professor M.Mosihuzzaman, Vice-president of NITUB attended the conference to represent ANRAP. Professor Zaman also delivered a plenary lecture in the conference. Professor Altaf Hussain, General Secretary of NITUB gave an oral representation on the activities of NITUB and also presented a poster on NITUB in the conference. Dr. Peter Sundin had a meeting with Professors M. Mosihuzzaman and Altaf Hussain during the conference and it was a very positive meeting and hopefully NITUB would get continued support of IPICS to run its activities.
Professor Begum Rokeya, Joint Secretary, NITUB was invited to present NITUB in the 8th E-SALAMA workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia held on 7-11 December 2009. During the workshop, Professor Rokeya presented paper on the activities of NITUB and also its future programs. The participants of the workshop highly appreciated NITUB and were planning to have a similar network in their countries.
Training of Instrument Engineer
The instrument repair program of NITUB attracted the needs more manpower, therefore the EC of NITUB decided to create another post of full time instrument engineer of NITUB. The post was advertised and Mr. Abul Kalam Chowdhury was appointed as an instrument engineer of NITUB from 01 June 2009. Subsequently, Mr. Abul Kalam Chowdhury was sent for higher training in Umeå University, Sweden for 2 months (October-November-2009). Mr. Chowdhury completed his training successfully and his supervisor, Mr. Lars Lundmark, commended his achievement highly.
Grant application
IPICS usually invites research projects / networks to apply for grant. Thanks to IPICS for inviting NITUB to apply for grant for the year 2010- 2012. Accordingly, NITUB applied for grant in September 2009 for Swedish Kronor 250,000/- , 260,000/- and 280,000/- for the year 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively.
NITUB’s budget and expenditure
NITUB’s income and expenditure is being audited yearly by a registered chartered accountants firm.
(The audit report of NITUB of 2009 is enclosed herewith.)
Equipment Maintenance and Repair Workshop at Nepal by NITUN
16-20 June 2008
Report by NITUB experts
The following technical experts from the Network of Technical personnel and User scientists of Bangladesh (NITUB) were requested to attend the workshop “Equipment Maintenance and Repair Workshop” in Nepal organized by NITUN .
1. Mr. A.K.M.Rahmat Ullah, NITUB technical expert
2. Mr. Faruk Ahmad, NITUB technical expert
3. Mr. Kalam Chaudhury, NITUB technical expert
The three technical experts of NITUB arrived in Nepal on 15 June and returned after conducting the workshop on 21 June. The technical experts were requested to work as resource persons in the workshop. The team leader of NITUB technical experts, Mr. A.K.M. Rahmat Ullah, gave theoretical lectures as well as supervised laboratory sessions of the workshop. The other two experts were mainly demonstrating and explaining the repair techniques, maintenance, and trouble- shooting of scientific equipments.
During the workshop significant numbers of equipment has been repaired with limitation of time and spares. In the laboratory sessions of the workshop, a detailed of the trouble shooting procedure and techniques explained and practically demonstrate. Some equipment could not be repaired due to non-availability of spares. However, and the faulty spares were taken out from instruments and given as sample to procure from the market. These spare could not be purchased from the local market for which replacement procedure of these spares practically demonstrated and hopefully the participants would be able to replace successfully when the spare parts are available. Below is the list of equipment serviced, repaired and fault detected during the workshop by NITUB technical experts.
To keep the equipment in satisfactory operating condition and reduce down time, consumables spares of each equipment needs to be identified and it would be better to have stock of these parts. With out the knowledge of basic electronics, practical exposure of analytical instrument and training it is not possible to do the repairing work especially electronic circuit. NITUN, therefore, needs to train and develop their own technician for routine servicing, calibration and repair.
Finally, we thanked the organizers very much to make our stay in Nepal enjoyable and for their nice hospitality. We also would like to thank all the participants of the workshop for their cooperation. We are looking forward to have collaboration between NITUB and NITUN in future too.
